Editing Arbre-Earth Connections[]

Regarding this talk page: Do not use this talk page to discuss individual connections please. Using a single page to document all possible connections would become unmanageable.

Regarding Arbre-Earth Connections: Arbre-Earth Connections should exist as a list of connections. To document individual things, create pages for the Arbre side of the connection. To discuss individual connections, do so on the talk pages for the Arbre half of the connection.

For instance, if you wanted to debate wether no or not there was a connection bewtween Thelenes and Socrates, you go to the Talk:Thelenes and do it there. If the Arbre site page does not exist, feel free to create it, even if you just make it a stub.

Something should be said at the top of the page about the fundamental dissonance between Arbre and Earth, possibly because of a simplification and conflation due to being up-wick from Earth and therefore closer to the HTW. As such, there are some inherent problems with Arbre-Earth Connections.

Changed name to Earth-Arbre Correlations and added to the introduction to clarify the dissonace. -Ross Mayo 12/7/2009

Ongoing Connection Discussions[]

Old talk page[]

When I moved this page to Arbre-Earth Connections I left the old talk page at http://anathem.wikia.com/wiki/Talk:List_of_Suspected_References. Most of this I want to see moved under the community portal section for better, central planning.

Connection Categories[]

We currently have categories for People, Philosophy, Technology, Places, and Other. What do you think about creating a "History and Culture" category?

Tomben 20:33, 28 September 2008 (UTC)

I think its a great idea. I have added some H3 subheadings under the H2s you mention. FraaCodex 20:37, 13 December 2008 (UTC)

Earth Equivalent of Lorite[]

The closest I can find to an Earth equivalent for Saunt Lora is Mark Twain who said, "There is no such thing as a new idea. It is impossible. We simply take a lot of old ideas and put them into a sort of mental kaleidoscope. We give them a turn and they make new and curious combinations. We keep on turning and making new combinations indefinitely; but they are the same old pieces of colored glass that have been in use through all the ages." This of course did not spurn a whole branch of philosophy on Earth dedicated to proving that new ideas are in fact old ideas thus saving us from repeating the steps of our ancestors. I don't think there is an equivalent between Saunt Lora and anyone on Earth. I think that she be removed from the list of Arbre-Earth connections unless someone knows of a more equivalent Earthling than Mark Twain.--Fraa Ramon 18:28, 4 March 2009 (UTC)

Automated transfer of Problem Report #23223[]

The following message was left by Anonymous via PR #23223 on 2009-06-14 05:43:14 UTC

There is a contradiction in the connection relating to Kelx. Jehovah's Witnesses are anti-Trinitarian so to connect the Kelx to JW and to Trinitarian makes no sense. As the related article indicates, they seem more like Jehovah's witnesses. I recommend removing the reference to Trinitarianism.

Where is this coming from?[]

Post of these connections seem silly at best, and take away from the atmosphere and richness of the book. Where are they from. Are contributors just making these them up. If so they add nothing and this page should be deleted. Aldaron 03:01, October 21, 2009 (UTC)

The parallels between world is one of the key features in Anathem. The Arbre-Earth connections page is the most visited, most edited, and probably most informative. The page is staying.
So, If you are trolling, well done. If you truly feel that way, you are welcome to that opinion.

Not trolling, just trying to help make the wiki less crufty and more useful. Hence my questions; what's the source for these claimed parallels. If such sources exist, then by all means keep the (useful) page; if not, then it's just made up fan cruft and should at least be marked as such. Aldaron 03:51, October 24, 2009 (UTC)
I have to agree with Aldaron here--while some of the parallels (e.g., Pythagoras) are obvious and clearly intended, I just finished reading the book, and drew a completely different set of connections than the ones listed here, possibly as a result of my Buddhist rather than Socratic lineage. If someone were to read this list while they were reading the book, it might well ruin the book for them.--71.32.40.139 03:51, November 29, 2009 (UTC)
